Stop Wasting Your Differentiation: The Room-to-Room Experiment
Why your most mundane experiences are actually your highest-converting assets.
When I moved from Spain to Chicago two years ago, I had a massive problem. My Spanish brain knew how to talk to anyone, but the moment someone asked, “So, what do you do?” I froze.
I spent weeks trying to build the “perfect” elevator pitch. I used AI, I practiced in the mirror, I polished it until it was mathematically flawless.
And it completely bombed. Every time I delivered it, people’s eyes glazed over. I was performing a character of a business owner, and everyone in the room could smell the inauthenticity.
The Room-to-Room Pivot
Frustrated by my own over-edited failures, I decided to run an experiment at my next networking event. I threw out the script. Instead, I introduced myself differently to every single person I met in that room.
The Strategy: I watched their eyes. If I said a phrase and their eyebrows twitched, I changed it for the next person. If I shared a quick backstory and they leaned in, I kept it.
The Realization: You are the only person who has to hear yourself repeat your intro all night. Treat it like a dynamic feedback loop, not a static monologue.
By treating the room as an excavation site, I stopped sounding like a generic service provider and started sounding like a distinct human being. My confidence didn’t come from a mindset shift; it came from gathering evidence of what actually connected.
You Are Too Used to Your Own Genius
In my latest YouTube video, I break down why entrepreneurs routinely waste their most compelling narratives.
We have lived our own stories for so long that they feel ordinary to us. We discount our wildest wins and our hardest lessons because they are just “what happened.”
But remember this: The things you find basic about your journey are often the exact things that make a stranger stop and say, “Wow.”
Stop Sounding Like Everyone Else
Your service or product is not your differentiator. You are. But as long as you keep editing out the quirks, the geography, the failures, and the specific worldview that shaped you, you are just commodity software in a crowded market.
Let’s fix this together:
